Lyda Ruijter took over the Town Clerk's office and cleaned up an office that was a hotbed of corruption, and which handed out absentee ballots like they were candy to those who shouldn't have them. Her office is now thorough, and effective. She's also advocated for preservation of the city's original charter and advocated for a symbolic, but meaningful, land use acknowledgment statement where indigenous inhabitants of Stamford were recognized in its founding.

Lyda’s work putting the Town Clerk’s records online has helped countless attorneys like myself, as well as title company searchers, do their jobs much more efficiently. Most cities already have those records online, and it was high time for Stamford to join the 21st century!

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Lyda and the Town Clerk’s office on four different occasions, and each experience has been outstanding.
My first visit was to request a document proving domicile in Stamford. Lyda kindly explained that she was not legally permitted to provide such a document, but she was quick to offer assistance in any other way she could.
On my second visit, I needed documents related to our home, which her staff provided promptly and efficiently through their newly created online digitized document system.
The third time, I went in to register my business. Lyda and her team were fantastic—patiently walking me through the forms and explaining not just the “how,” but also the “why” behind the process. Most recently, I required an official stamped document verifying that I was alive for legal purposes abroad. This request was well within her authority, and Lyda handled it immediately and with great professionalism.
Each time I visited, Lyda personally stepped out of her office to see who might need assistance, or her staff took care of me with the same level of efficiency and courtesy. The Town Clerk’s office truly runs like a Swiss watch. I honestly can’t imagine how it could be improved. When something works this well, you don’t change it!
