During a special open house at the City and Town Clerk’s Office, Town Clerk Lyda Ruijter invited Stamford residents to explore the rich trove of public records—ranging from centuries-old birth and death certificates (some dating back to 1641) to original land deeds, 19th-century maps, early photographs, and more. The displays, complemented by playful "Did you know…" thought bubbles, highlighted little-known historical gems—like early land trades made in livestock or the antiquated dog-tax system, where unpaid fees could result in the dog being destroyed. Ruijter emphasized her desire to make the city’s history visible and accessible, installing computers near the entrance so visitors could conduct title searches without navigating the vault's stairs. She also took steps to strengthen front-line service by deputizing two assistants—Chanta Graham and Diane Pesiri—to handle document signings. The effort showcased Stamford’s archival treasures while underscoring Ruijter’s commitment to improving public access and customer service.
