Lyda Ruijter, Stamford’s City and Town Clerk since 2017, authored an opinion letter in the CT Examiner reflecting on her service and outlining her campaign as an Independent candidate in the upcoming November 4 election.
She highlights major achievements during her tenure, including modernizing the office’s software systems to improve security and efficiency, digitizing 300,000 pages of land records over the past year, and expanding online access for residents. Today, nearly half of the office’s 17,000 annual transactions, from marriage licenses and dog licenses to land record retrievals, can be completed entirely online, reducing the need for in-person visits.
Looking ahead, she has launched a multi-stage capital project to digitize the remaining land records, with the first installment already approved. Ruijter explains that her decision to run as an Independent stems from local Democratic politics that blocked her nomination, but she stresses her nonpartisan record of service. She frames her candidacy as both a continuation of effective leadership and a statement against rigid two-party entrenchment, urging voters to choose the candidate who will best serve Stamford’s future.
